A
All-in:

A wager in which players bet all of the chips in their stake at once.

Ante:

The minimum bet placed into the pot before any cards are dealt.

Bad Beat hand:

A strong hand that loses in the showdown. See how to win Bad Beat Jackpots.

Bring-in:

Also called the “forced bet,” the bring-in is a bet that must be placed by the player with the lowest face-up card in 5-Card Stud and 7-Card Stud.

Buy-in:

The number of chips required to join a Real Play table. The amount of the buy-in is set by certain rules that are different in Limit Poker, No-Limit Poker and Pot Limit Poker.

Flop:

The flop is comprised of the first three community cards dealt face up in Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo poker. The flop is followed by the turn and the river. The flop is dealt before the second betting round.

H
Heads-up:

A game situation in which only two players are still active at a poker table, or a game played by only two players.

High card:

When two hands have identical combinations, the high card is the highest card in either hand that is not in a combination.

Multi-table tournaments:

A tournament played on several tables and which generally starts on a day and at a time that have been set in advance. See variables of multi-table tournaments.

Poker cashier:

A virtual space where players can buy or re-buy chips.

Poker lobby:

Sometimes called the “anteroom,” the poker lobby is the window that displays the table of games and tournaments that are underway. See the chart that explains abbreviations used in the poker lobby. The lobby includes a fast table/player search engine as well as various information about your profile such as your account balance and your Poker Experience Points.

Pot:

Amount comprising all bets placed during all the betting rounds of a given hand, excluding the rake, which is taken by the winner or winners.

Purse:

Total amount in play during a tournament. The way purses are shared at multi-table tournaments or sit and go tournaments varies. Details are avaIlable in the poker lobby.

Rake:

The rake in a Real Play game is collected from player bets, up to a fixed maximum amount. The tournament rake represents a portion of the registration fees paid by tournament registrants.

Rebuy

In a tournament, the term « rebuy » means the possibility of coming back in the tournament after being eliminated, by rebuying the same amount of chips received at the start of the tournament, the rebuy option will be specified in the tournament description.

River:

The fifth community card dealt face up before the fourth and last betting round in Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo. Preceded by the flop and the turn.

S
Satellite:

A satellite is a qualifying tournament for a bigger tournament. A satellite tournament can be multi-table or sit and go.

Showdown:

After the last betting round, players show their cards to determine who holds the winning hand.

Sit and go tournament:

A tournament that starts when all seats are filled. For more details, see Learn to Play in Tournaments.

Sit out:

Possibility for a player to leave the table for a maximum of ten hands without losing their seat. See How to sit out a game.

Stake:

The value of the chips held by a player sitting at a table.

Turn:

The fourth community card, dealt face up before the third betting round in Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo.

50BB/50MA 50 big blinds / 50 grosses mises à l'aveuglette Players can take a seat if they have a stake that is at least 50 times the big limit (as opposed to 20 times at a regular table). If the table limit is $1/$2 in no-limit poker, players can take a seat if they have a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $400 (i.e. 200 times the big limit, as opposed to 100 times at a regular table).
DS/MP Deepstack Players can take a seat if they have a stake that is at least 20 times the big limit (same as at a regular table), but with a maximum of 300 times the big limit (as opposed to 100 times at a regular table).
HU/TàT Heads-up/Tête-à-tête A table where only two players go head-to-head.
BBJ BadBeat/C-Cœur A table where players pay into the Bad Beat Jackpot pool for a chance to win it.
